Richard (Rick) C. Dougherty

Richard C. (Rick) Dougherty is a Distinguished Research Associate and Program Coordinator in ExxonMobil’s Product Technology organization. Since taking on this role in 2012, Rick and his team have helped provide marketing and capital project-related technical support to ExxonMobil’s Basestocks business, and is responsible for base stock intellectual property development and maintenance. In addition, Rick also serves as ExxonMobil’s global industry advocate for base stocks. In that capacity, he chairs the API BOI/VGRA Task Force and leads the recently created API Base Stock Manufacturers interest group forum.

Rick began his career with Mobil in the 1980’s as an industrial lubricant formulator. Subsequently, he held positions within the process research organization before taking on a leadership role for Mobil’s hydroprocessed base stock research and engineering efforts. He has played key roles in the development and commercialization of ExxonMobil’s MSDW and MaxSat process technologies.

During his nine-year hiatus from ExxonMobil, Rick held various engineering and supply chain management positions for a specialty chemical company. Upon Rick’s return to ExxonMobil’s process research organization, he was given the responsibility of leading the company’s heavy feed upgrading research before assuming his current position.

Rick holds a B.S. in Chemical Engineering from Rutgers University, and M.S. and PhD degrees in the same discipline from Drexel University.
