John F Seymour graduated from Newcastle University in 1968. A very keen rugby enthusiast, he played rugby for Newcastle University, Hartlepool Rovers and Middlesbrough also representing England Universities, Northumberland, Durham and Yorkshire.

John farms in a family partnership at Stokesley in North Yorkshire. The farm is made up of 600 acres arable, 250 acres grass supporting 500 beef cattle and 750 sheep. It has diversified into fishing lakes, and a green waste composting operation. The family are further involved in a joint contract farming business with Andrew Gloag, recently voted Arable Farmer of the Year 2009.
 
He became NFU County Chairman in 1994, then regional delegate to the NFU Council in 1995. He was chairman of the Parliamentary Land Use and Environment Committee from 2000-20003. He was made a member of the National Board in 2003 which led to re-organisation, and re-location. He joined the board of Farmway in 1996 and is currently chairman of the arable committee.
